The show is so widely loved that people ritually gather on Sunday night in local bars to watch it together on the big screen.
Last Sunday, the story was about a theme that has very dark undertones: honor killings in Turkish immigrant families. This phenomena, which is actually on the decrease, is almost always carried out by first generation fathers and/or brothers against daughters or wives that 'dishonor the family'. But in this drama, it occurred in a wealthy family, and the killer was actually the victim's younger sister. It was lurid and openly scornful of Turkish/Muslim culture and customs. I was shocked that a mainstay of popular culture could get away with such propaganda, especially now, in the wake of the Norway tragedy, and the disturbing rise of racism and nationalism in European countries. Not a good sign.
